Drowning off Libya Claims the Lives of at Least 50 Sudanese Migrants

The International Organization for Migration announced today, Wednesday, a tragic drowning incident off the Libyan coast, resulting in the deaths of at least 50 Sudanese migrants, including women and children.
According to a source in the International Organization for Migration, "the tragic incident occurred when a fire broke out on a rubber boat carrying 75 Sudanese refugees," on Sunday off the coast of Tobruk in eastern Libya. The source added that "at least 50 people lost their lives," while 24 other migrants were rescued.
Since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011 during a NATO-backed uprising, Libya has become a major transit point for migrants fleeing conflicts and poverty, trying to reach Europe across the Mediterranean Sea.
The latest data from the International Organization for Migration indicates that the number of residents in Libya as of February 2025 is approximately 867,055 migrants from 44 different nationalities.
